How I Met My Favorite MC of All-Time (Brad ‘Scarface’ Jordan)

5/29/2015

On May 10, 2015 around 1:00am I could simply say that I met Scarface, he signed a copy of his book, we took a few photos, kicked it with him for a few hours and went home, the end… but there is an irresistible story to tell. For those who are not familiar with Brad ‘Scarface’ Jordan *Record skips… Huh? Wait! What? What Planet have you been living on? He’s only the GREATEST MC OF ALL-TIME.  To put it in perspective, for me it is equivalent to a championship sports team visiting The President at the White House. So kick your heels up, make yourself comfortable, as I share my adventure that led to hanging out with my favorite MC of All-Time.

What’s up World! Many of you know me as D Wizard of Abs; nevertheless as an author my pen name is Wiz Writes. Anyone who personally knows me is aware that Scarface is my favorite MC. His music, tone, and flow are like no other artist that has ever touched a mic.  Before calling himself Scarface I was introduced to his music in 1989 under the stage name DJ Akshen as he told a raw street story on a song titled Scarface.
I wore that cassette tape out everyday on my JVC Boombox, never imagining that 26 years later I would be sitting here writing a story about how I met him.

April 18, 2015 11:46pm Relaxing in my vacation condo on Miami Beach. {*Beep beep beep} my phone alerts me that I am receiving a text message. I reach for my phone and it’s a random text from my ex-girlfriend Nichole.  She is a chocolate-complexion natural-green-eyed former fitness model whose birthday happens to be the same day as mine. I haven’t spoken to her in years other than our annual happy birthday texts.

Nichole: Hi. Did you hear Scarface was coming back to ATL? 11:46 PM

Wiz: Nope. When? 11:55 PM

The next morning the {tex-versation} continues…

April 19, 2015 8:02am

Nichole: I heard them mention it on the radio last night...tail end so didn't get date. But the promo was on radio station 99.3 and the club was dejavu 8:02 AM

Wiz: oh okay I'll probably miss it b/c I don't get back until next month. https://www.instagram.com/p/CEM6Gg8BdBD/?igsh=MXdlZjRnYmVwajQ0cg==  8:51 AM
Nichole: You get WiFi out there? 8:51 AM

Wiz: yes. My condo has WiFi.  :) Are you telling me to look it up? Or are you asking if I get WiFi on the boat?? 8:53 AM

Nichole: On the boat 8:58 AM

Wiz: yeah I can still connect to the rest of the world while on the boat, make phone calls and all that. 8:59 AM

Nichole: I always wondered how people got WiFi on boats. 9:10 AM

Wiz: Satellite Towers are everywhere. :) Besides I was only a few miles away from land. 9:17 AM

Wiz: If I needed to get to shore I could speed and get to land in about 20 minutes. 9:17 AM

Nichole: Oh OK. So how far out you think you could go and still get WiFi? Do you sleep on the boat? 9:22 AM

Wiz: Cellphone Towers and satellites are so abundant I can't imagine not being able to get to a signal in the US. No I don't sleep on the boat. I have a condo on South Beach. 9:27 AM

[Later that evening the tex-versation resumes…]

Nichole: Now back to this scarface fella 10:25 PM

Nichole: Did you know he has a new book out? 10:25 PM

Nichole: Did you know he has braces? 10:25 PM

Wiz: nope.  10:25 PM

Nichole: Watch Scarface’s Mystifying Nightly Show Appearance – Stereogum http://www.stereogum.com/1796425/watch-scarfaces-mystifying-nightly-show-appearance/video/10:27 PM

Nichole: Is he still your favorite? 10:28 PM

Nichole: Must not be. Who is it now? Are you on the boat right now with ocean WiFi? 10:28 PM

Nichole: Who is this boy that play for New Orleans that needs to take care of his unibrow 10:33PM

Wiz: Scarface is still #1. 10:34 PM

Wiz: Anthony Davis 10:34 PM

Nichole: I think scarface must be so deep that the average Joe (including myself) can't follow. I watched that clip I sent you. And he was over my head.... 10:36 PM

Wiz: I haven't watched it yet. 10:37 PM

April 25, 2015 4:09pm After a brief Google search to locate current Scarface news, I grabbed my phone and texted Nichole my discovery.

Wiz: https://play.google.com/books/reader?id=YkFABAAAQBAJ&printsec=frontcover&output=reader&hl=en&pg=GBS.PP1 5:01 PM

Nichole: I must say...to one who didn't know any better.... it would appear that I was the scarface fan and you were not. I know about Scarface's performances, his new book, and talk shows he is on before you do. I believe you need to up your "number 1 fan" game. 6:14PM

Wiz: I said he's my number one favorite rapper of all time 6:51 PM

Nichole: What's your point? ☺ 6:53 PM

Wiz: You may be a bigger "fan"  ;-) 7:18 PM

8pm
I just finished working out, killing Hivo’s Beach Abs Workout routine at the Beach Barzz on 9th and Ocean Drive. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egnITRlhZv8
I grabbed my black Adidas slingshot backpack, hoist it around my shirtless shoulders and hopped on my bamboo longboard. Before skating home for the night, I decided to stop in front of the Clevelander to “girl watch” for a few minutes.
A friend of mine, (Warrior) was visiting South Beach for a few days, so I texted him to hop on his bike and ride over.

Wiz: Dude ride Debo to the Clevelander on 10th and ocean 8:08 PM

Warrior: Ok cool 8:08 PM
Picture
Warrior chilling on (Debo) his Beach Cruiser
While girl watching I tell him about the Scarface conversation that I had with Nichole. Warrior quickly grabbed his phone and begins playing recent Scarface videos. As he was trying to recall a face track from back in the day, he mentions Devin The Dude and Too Short were featured on it. I immediately yelled out Fuck Faces and started rapping Scarface’s verse:

Man I met this chick so fine

So bad She made me sick some time

I just had to fuck this bitch one time

I met her in the galleria shopping, buying

Gifts for some guy that she dating, still shot

Second anniversary and I'm congratulating that

But man she had an ass so fat

You couldn't palm it with Shaquille hands

It seems to me…

Simultaneously, Warrior and I both shouted the next line…

“SHE HAD THE WHOLE WORLD IN HER PANTS”

Unbeknownst to us, at that precise moment a VERY well shapely chocolate young lady wearing white jeans, walked passed from behind with her male friend. He laughed at us assuming that we were talking about his girl’s derriere as she smiled. We laughed also because the timing could not have been more superb! That one line fit the situation so perfectly!
Picture
By the way, I LOVE to see ladies wearing white bottoms!
Jeans, pants, shorts, skirts, tight dresses, capris, swimsuits, and any other white bottoms that exist…
Hmmmm...
April 20, 2015 4:30pm The next evening before returning to Dallas, Warrior stopped by my crash pad. We chopped it up (talked/conversed) about Scarface’s music and upcoming projects for about an hour.

5:45pm

Wiz: Yo son! Send me those Face links.

Warrior: Bet *sends links

May 6, 2015 In Atlanta I am driving my car perusing through the radio stations. I hear a snippet of an advertisement announcing that Scarface will be in town performing at Déjà vu on May 9th show starting at 12am.  Once home, I went online to Google more info about the venue and how to obtain tickets. After not finding the answers, I went on a Kanye West rant. “You ain’t got the answers Google! Google you ain’t got the answers!”
So I begin checking online for a store I can pick up Scarface’s book Diary of a Madman, but the information read that the book could only be purchased online.  So I discontinued my search for the night.

The next evening Thursday May 7, 2015 8:30pm After Beast Mode I shouted to Tee…

Wiz: Hey ghetto girl

Tee: *Rolls eyes What? Jamaican!

Wiz: What’s up with Déjà vu? What’s it’s like? How is it? I know its hood but tell me about it.

Tee: I don’t know, I never been there and don’t be calling me ghetto!

Wiz: Fine. Whatever. I know that’s your side of town so I was trying to get some info about it.

Tee: I’ll find out.

Wiz: cool.

May 8, 2015 9:00am Talking to T.Raspreet, a personal trainer and someone I believe who has a bright future in the field of fitness …
Wiz: I need to find that Scarface book!

T.Raspreet: You can only buy it online.

Wiz: Naw, somebody is selling it! I bet Barnes & Noble has it.

T.Raspreet: I’ll call.

*She calls the Perimeter location…

T.Raspreet: Do you guys carry Scarface ‘ Diary of a Madman’? Oh you do? Yes I would like for you to put a copy on hold for me thanks.

Wiz: Why did you put it on hold in your name? I’m the one picking it up. When I get there I’ll pick up my own copy and leave that one on hold.

10:30am I’m getting ready for an 11:30am meeting in the Perimeter Dunwoody Area. As I am walking out the door I received news that I-285 is backed up and I need to find another route. I gathered the detour information and headed out. I noticed that traffic was thick even on the surface roads. In the process of making my way around what could have potentially been hours of sitting in traffic, I received a call notifying me that there was a plane crash on the highway. Before that call I was wondering why police were blocking both sides of the interstate as I and only 10 other cars traveled west.

I immediately sent this email…

A few minutes later as I approached the Ashford Dunwoody exit: this brief text exchanged occurred.

Cathy: Good morning... Just checking on you to make sure that you are alright... I am at Panera as previously advised. 11:45 AM

Wiz: yes I'm here check your email 11:46 AM

Cathy: Oh my... Be safe... I'll be here for a while... 11:47 AM

During the meeting I was made aware of the details of the horrific single engine plane crash accident that claimed the lives of four family members.
The family was traveling to see another family member graduate from College, my condolences to the victim’s family and friends during this difficult time.

6pm After my meeting I drove directly to Barnes & Noble Booksellers. I walked in the store and there were only a few people inside. I looked to my right where a sign read “Recent Releases”. I walked over to the table, Voilà! There are only two copies of Diary of a Madman remaining. I quickly grabbed one and proceeded straight to the clerk since no one was in line.

Clerk: Are you a card member?

Wiz: No.

Clerk: Do you need a bag?

Wiz: No.

I was in and out of there in less than 3 minutes.

With that being said… Brad will be in Atlanta tomorrow (Sat. May 9th) at a place call Deja Vu on Campbellton Rd. I have gone online to look for info about this venue and cannot find any. So ATL who knows about this place? I don't want to purchase a "VIP ticket" just to be standing in a "General" area. Can somebody fill me in?
I jokingly thought to myself, “Yeah, I’ll show Face this post tomorrow.”

Shit crazy. I'll just pay at the door.

11:58pm I am on my iPad using the World Series of Poker App to play Texas Hold’em. A couple minutes later I hear my MacBook Pro alert me of the time. “It’s 12’oclock” I’m thinking, “Damn, man let me get up and head to the Scarface concert.” So I threw on some jeans, construction boot timberlands, a greenish tan t-shirt, and a tan fisherman/bucket hat.  The thought occurred that I might meet Face so I grabbed the book and hurried out.

1:03am I arrive at the location. A dark-skin brother looking like Chris Partlow from The Wire walks up after I parked. Assuming he was the parking attendant, I asked, “how much?” he said, “Ten”. I reached in my left jean pocket pulled out a twenty and handed it to him.
Picture
I briefly begin to wonder if he actually was the parking attendant as he struggled looking for change. I mentally flashed back to an old episode of Martin & Hustle Man.
He finally hands me a crumbled up ten-dollar bill he found in his back pocket. He then walks over and sits in a black jeep truck parked in front of me. I got out of the car, grabbed my phone, looked at the book, but decided to leave it in the car. Walking towards the venue located about 100yards away I begin to think, “damn why didn’t I fully charge the battery to this stupid iPhone”.  I looked up and four dudes were approaching. Two of them were super dark-skin wearing black clothing, one standing 6’4”and the other around 6’0”. One was light skin around 6’4”, the one in the middle stood about 5’9” wearing a red {A} (Atlanta) hat. As they walked passed I briefly glanced over at them. The two in black had Security on the back of their shirts. The crew was approaching an entrance to the food quarters of the building. In the process I continued to walk, I said to myself calmly, “Wait. That was Scarface.”

So I turned around and walked back to my car slowly. (I walk so slow; have done so all of my life) I grabbed my copy of Scarface’s book, Diary of A Madman and two ink pens. The attendant walked over and said, “Oh damn, I thought you had left your door opened”, as he began to tell me a story of a guy once leaving his windows down and the car running. I ended the conversation briefly while walking back to the food quarters. I opened the door to this brightly lit wooden shed. Standing before me was the 6’4” big dark skin security guard. (Let’s call him 6’4) I played it cool as I walked in. After stepping in I saw the other security guard, he stood about an inch or so shorter than me. To my left stood Scarface with his back turned talking to the light skin tall guy. Also inside waiting for food he just ordered was a young guy who resembled Waka Flocka Flame. 6’4 looked at me and said in a deep voice, “You trying to order some food?” I did not say anything, I just walked up closer to the counter. The guy behind the glass counter asked me, “You want to order something?” Again I didn’t say a word as I looked down at one of the menus. I looked to my left Face back was still turned. I figured I did not have much time before I was asked to leave by the two giant 300lb-meat-heads since I was not ordering food. 6’4 looked down at my right hand, which was gripping the book. He mumbled, “Oh okay. I got it now”.  I thought, “Cool, he’s not about to trip.” Face turned around and I took one step closer but kept my distance, about 6 feet away. He looked at me; I did not say a word. I placed the book on the counter in front of me so he could see what I was holding. In the calmest appreciative tones Face said, “He got the book. He got that book tho!”
I gave him a cool nod of respect and said in the coolest voice, “No doubt, you mind signing it for me?” He generously and quickly said “No doubt!” as I handed him a pen and he signed it.  I thought he would just hand me the book and I would be off on my way to get a ticket for the show, but no…

Face: “You read it yet?”

Wiz: “No, I just picked it up yesterday.”

Face: “That’s my life! Real shit!”

He turns to the Introduction and reads it out loud.

https://play.google.com/books/reader?id=YkFABAAAQBAJ&printsec=frontcover&output=reader&hl=en&pg=GBS.PT6

After he finished I was standing there as cool and calm as I am known to be.

Wiz: No doubt I’m going to read it. Dude you #1 on my top ten list of MCs.

Face: Word?

I reached for my phone, pulled up my Facebook post from the night before and handed it to him.

Wiz: Read this.

As he read it, he said respectfully…

Face: The boy Method is a fool with it!

He continued reading.  When he got to 3 stacks (Andre 3000) he nodded his head with mad props…

Face: 3 Stacks is the motherfucking truth!

After he read the list he handed me the phone.

Wiz: Homie you got to get in a picture with me.

Face: Hell yeah! Come on. Let’s do it!

6’4 held out his big ass hand for my iPhone and snapped a few photos of Face and me.
Face ‘dapped me up’ (shook my hand)

Face: You coming to the show?

Wiz:  Hell yeah, No doubt!

Immediately and cool as fuck he said…

Face: Well, fuck it! You might as well roll with us!

So there I stood, with Face, his boy, two security guards, and fake Waka Flocka. My Facebook post Face read sparked a conversation about old school hip-hop and new school rap. This was truly becoming a moment of a lifetime for me. A few minutes later a 6’4” light skin security guard walked in looking like a swollen tatted up version of the comedian DeRay. The conversation continued for about 20 minutes. Face then said, “Alright y’all, let’s go”. So Face, his boy (let’s call him Andre because he looks like he could be the older brother or uncle of Golden State Warriors shooting guard Andre Iguodala), the three security guards and I left the food quarters.

1:30am As we are walking towards the club.  We noticed on the side of the building there were 4 young thugs squatting and kneeling shooting dice in the dark. We all walked over as fake Dee Ray said, “Naw, y’all can’t do that!” The young dark skin, thin little shirtless guy shooting the dice wearing his hair in locks raised up saying, “Come on dog! I’m trying to win this money so I can see Face!” He suddenly noticed Face standing right behind him. He said excitedly, “Shit! I’m trying to win this money to see you Face!” Face said calmly to fake Dee Ray, “shit we ain’t seen nothing”.  The dice game continued.  The young guy won that round and started rolling again. After throwing the dice a few times the young guy crapped out. Face laughed and said, “I was just about to say fade the five.” If you do not know how to roll craps, I am not about to teach you, but it meant that Face was going to bet $5 that the young guy crapped out before hitting his point. Had Face made the bet he would have been $5 richer. As we stood there some other guys from the hood walked over to show Face some love and respect. Face seemed to be comfortable and right at home. From the outside looking in, we all looked like we knew each other for years and were just hanging out on the block.  Well minus the three big ass security guards. I noticed that the security guards were not Faces’ personal security, they worked at the club. Meaning the only person he was with was Andre and now me.
It made me think about a verse Face rapped in his song “Recognize”

How can a nigga from the South get a pass in every section

And walk the projects with no protection

Be surrounded by a mob, and not get robbed

Considered to be a savior, and not be God (Whoa)

The reason Face can spit that verse is because it is true. I am witnessing it first hand.
After hanging out for about 10 minutes we headed to the rear entrance of the club.  As Face and Andre entered, the 6’0” security guard looked up at me with this confused look on his face and said, “Where you going?” I said, “Face told me to roll with him.”  I’m thinking to myself, “Damn! I've been hanging out all this time and I’m not going to be allowed in? What the fuck!” Andre looked back and said to the guard “He with us.” I’m thinking, “whew”, as I walked up to get between Face and Andre. We were led to the VIP section where Bone Crusher was sitting holding an assistance walking cane entertaining the conversation of two nice looking young ladies.
The club reminded me of Moods.
A nightclub I use to frequent with my cousins and friends back in the day on the Hip Strip in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
The moment of truth: It’s show time; Face looked at me and said, “Watch this”. Security led Face to the stage as Andre and I followed closely behind. As we walked on stage he removed his glasses like Clark Kent becoming Superman. I could see the transformation from Brad Jordan to Scarface. It was like he turned on a switch and BAM the (GOAT) appeared. I didn’t want to watch the show from the back of the stage so I decided to walk to the side. I grabbed my half juiced phone and begin recording the show.
After 29 minutes the battery life expired. I placed the phone in my pocket and continued enjoying the show. Face is KILLING the stage and Fuck Faces begins to play. I’m like, “Oh shit!” I begin spitting the lyrics. Face noticed that I was flowing along with him, so as he got to the line “Second anniversary and I'm congratulating that” he walks towards me and say the next line to me “But man she had an ass so fat” Along with him I say the next line “You couldn't palm it with Shaquille hands” he points the mic towards me and I say next line into the mic “SHE HAD THE WHOLE WORLD IN HER PANTS”!

What the fuck! 14 days ago I was spitting the EXACT same lyrics with my boy Warrior in Miami. I took this as an omen or some type of prognostication that this was meant to happen. A higher power had this written! It was NO WAY for me to fathom that on April 19th after receiving a random text from my ex-girlfriend about Scarface coming to Atlanta, that I would have believed on May 9th I would be standing right next to him on this stage!
After the performance he stood on stage and signed an autograph for every person that asked. He took photos with every single person that walked up to the stage. He did not leave one person hanging. As we walked to the VIP area he continued to sign autographs and stop for pictures. Once we entered the VIP section there were more people asking for photos and autographs. Afterwards he sat on the couch looked up at me as I stood. I leaned down dapped him up and said…

Wiz: Thank you! Also I am happy for you still being around and living healthier.

Face: I had to!

Wiz: By the way, I am D Wizard of Abs.

He grabbed his shirt holding his stomach…

Face: I need Abs, I ain’t got none.

Wiz: That’s what I do!

Face: I need to fuck with you! Call your number from my phone and put your info in my phone.

He hands me his phone. While dialing my number, more people walk over to talk to him. I stood there programing my info into his phone. He looks up after the small crowd leaves and I handed him his phone.

Face: Hit me up.

Wiz: Bet.

He looked at Bone, stood up and said I’m ready. Bone whispered to one of the young ladies and she walks out. We all stood there as we took notice of a super thick bikini wearing young lady who worked at the club.  After a few slick comments, we made our way out of the back door. Outside we stood there while Face took a moment to talk on camera to one of the cameramen on the scene. A grey Range Rover pulled up. Bone was on the passenger side talking on the phone and the young lady was driving. Bone spoke into the phone. “No, we about to drop Face off at his hotel room.” 6’4 opened the back passenger door, Face hopped in. I threw up the deuces to Face to indicate, “Peace, I’m out”. He opened the door and said to me, “Call me. Don’t forget to hit me up.” I replied, “No doubt”. 6’4 looked at me as the Rover pulled off and said “Damn, you really do fuck with ‘Face huh”. I looked at him and gave him a light head nod and walked to my car. I sat in the car and thought,  “Damn. I just kicked it with Face.”

5/12/15 2:49 PM I exchanged a few texts with Face.

Face: Wiz what's good 2:49 PM

Wiz: You got it homie! 2:49 PM

Wiz: 'Face here is a pic of us from the other night in the ATL https://www.facebook.com/DWizardofabs
I'm currently writing a short story/blog about your night in the ATL. Glad to see u taking the steps to get your health in order. I'm serious about helping u taking your fitness to the next level. I'm the TRUTH in health & fitness. Glad u threw the fried shrimp & fries away too; u didn't need to be eating it no way. After writing and reading this story, I thought to myself, “Shit I don’t want anyone thinking I am Jock riding or no shit like that. I just have mad respect for the homie and his music.”
That thought quickly dissipated after reading the words of the highly respected leader of Public Enemy. The one and only Chuck D himself explained it PERFECTLY!
